Understanding Why Your Pooch Chews And Controlling The Behavior

By Ed Jamison

Puppies chew as a way to explore and relate to the world around them. The activity is instinctive to them. Unfortunately, if chewing behavior is focused in the wrong direction, it can result in damaged clothes, shoes, and furniture.

It's important to realize that adult dogs also chew, but do so for a variety of reasons that extend further than mere exploration. For example, your pooch might feel separation anxiety if you leave him alone for long periods. Or, he might be bored. This happens often when canines lack an outlet through which to expend their pent-up energy. Your pooch may also chew on your belongings as a way to get your attention.

Whatever the reasons for the destructive behavior, you can control the problem. Below, we'll provide a few tips for training your dog to avoid chewing on your possessions.

Use A Crate

Crating your puppy is an ideal strategy for confining him when you're unable to watch him. Not only will he come to see his crate as his personal space, but you'll prevent him from ruining your furniture and clothes when you're not home. If you plan to keep him crated, be sure to give him a few toys with which he can entertain himself.

Provide Chew Toys

The goal is not to eliminate your pooch's penchant for chewing; again, that's his way of relating to the world around him. Instead, redirect the behavior toward objects that are acceptable for him to chew.

For example, all pet supply stores sell chew toys that can keep your canine occupied. Some are rubber; others are made from durable rope; still others are designed from strong leather and rawhide. Any of these toys will keep your dog's attention while providing the stimulation he desires.

Keep Your Departures Understated

Owners often unwittingly worsen their dogs' separation anxiety by overstating their departures. When they return home, they're surprised to find their furniture partially destroyed. Downplay leaving your home. The bigger fuss you make, the more likely your dog will sense that your leaving is a major event. That raises the likelihood of his chewing.

Provide An Outlet For Exercise

When canines lack an outlet for physical activity, they become bored. Moreover, their energy level remains unspent and stifled. That's a recipe for destructive chewing. Make sure your pooch receives at least an hour of exercise each day. He's less likely to suffer boredom and he'll have less pent-up energy to direct toward your couch.

Offer A Swap

Puppies find chewing new objects to be irresistible. If you see your pup gnawing on something he shouldn't be, take the item away and replace it immediately with a chew toy. Avoid getting into a tug-of-war contest with him. Instead, have a toy on hand and swap it quickly.

Some dogs love to chew almost anything they can get into their mouths. Other canines are more selective, though they can cause just as much destruction. Learn to control the problem by redirecting your dog's chewing behavior to objects you don't mind being destroyed. - 32366

How To Discourage Your Dog's Territorial Aggression

By Brian Westfall

Canines are hardwired to protect their territory from intruders. In most cases, they communicate a warning to others by barking; it's a form of intimidation. If a trespasser fails to heed the warning, your pooch's barking might turn into pacing and growling as if he is preparing for a physical confrontation. If the trespasser still refuses to leave, the pacing and growling may evolve into an attack.

If your pooch shows signs of territorial aggression, it is important to begin discouraging the behavior as soon as possible. Otherwise, your visitors' safety might be at risk. This article will provide several tips you can use to discourage your dog from behaving aggressively over his territory.

Before Training Begins

There are a few medical conditions that can influence your canine's tendency to act aggressively toward others. For example, hypothyroidism causes a deficiency of thyroid hormones and can lead to his feeling overly-anxious. If he becomes agitated enough, his anxiety can potentially prompt an attack.

You should also take precautions to ensure that you and your dog will not be interrupted by strangers during your training sessions. Close and lock your gates, especially if you're training him off-leash.

Action Steps To Curb Aggressive Behavior

First, make sure your canine receives at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. That will help prevent pent-up energy from contributing to his anxiety or aggression.

Second, devote time each day to training your dog to respond to your single-word commands. Many professional trainers recommend a program that includes two or three short sessions (5 minutes per session is sufficient) each day. Whenever your canine successfully responds to your commands, provide a food treat.

In addition to these training sessions, make your pooch work for everything he desires. For example, require him to sit before serving him meals or giving him attention. Over time, your canine will learn that if he wants something, he must follow your commands to acquire it.

One of the challenges owners have with canines that are territorially aggressive is that their dogs often try to usurp the role of leader. This can be due to several factors, including a laxity toward actively curbing the aggressive behavior. To that end, it may be necessary to place a head halter on your pooch in situations that might provoke his aggression.

For example, if you're expecting visitors with whom your dog is unfamiliar, a head halter will gently encourage him to submit to your authority. That gives your pooch an opportunity to meet new people, and be rewarded (with treats) for staying calm when others trespass on "his" territory.

The suggestions above are effective for canines whose territorial aggression is based on dominance. If the aggressive behavior is triggered by a fear-based mechanism, a modified approach including desensitization and counter conditioning is necessary. Training in such cases is focused on reducing a dog's level of fear and changing the manner in which he perceives a potential threat. We'll address those training issues in an upcoming article. - 32366

Eliminate Dog Jumping

By Matt Closson

If you have ever owned a dog, one time or another you have probably dealt with this problem. Your dog is so happy to see you that he jumps up on you getting his muddy paws all over your new suit or dress. Or even worse, during his excitement he jumps on a smaller child and knocks them down or scratches the child's face, arms or legs.

Well guess what? Its all your fault.

You see, when your dog was just a little pup, you would be so excited to see that little guy that he would come to you in his cute puppy way and jump on your ankle (or barely reach your knee cap at this point) and you of course would bend over and pet him or even pick him up.

Your puppy has just learned a great lesson, jumping up is a good thing, it's a great way to get positive affection. Your dog doesn't understand the difference between a small, cute little puppy and in a matter of a few months he is now a larger adult dog with the mass and power to be able to take down a small adult human. All he knows is "jumping gets me love."

Is jumping ever acceptable?

You have to make it perfectly clear that jumping is unacceptable. Although owners of small breed dogs or "toy" dog breeds may expect their dog to jump, (this is totally up to you) but jumping on an unsuspecting guest could get things off on the wrong foot. That is why, if you do allow your dog to jump, you should at least work the command "off" into it's training.

For larger breed dog owners, training your dog commands such as "No Jump" and "off" should be mandatory. If not for the social aspect, at least for the safety of little ones in the house or that come to visit. Remember, a large dogs paws can easily be heavy enough to gouge your skin though your cloths, and it's one thing to put up with bruises, cuts and scrapes from your own dog, could you imagine if your dog did this to someone else, maybe a child. Yes, it is best that you either never teach your dog to jump or get this habit under control quickly.

Why does dog jumping happen?

The number one reason dogs jump is most likely out of pure excitement after a long separation (returning home from work) or during playtime when adrenaline is running high.

The number two reason dogs jump is a bit more complicated and serous. It has to do with dominance. Dogs social order comes from a pack mentality and the only way to move up the ranks in a pack is to show physical superiority over the lesser animal. Dogs often demonstrate their superiority over other dogs by mounting or jumping on the lesser dogs back or shoulders.

You can identify the reason for your dogs jumping by taking note of the circumstances surrounding the event. If he only jumps when extremely excited, such as playtime or upon your return home from work, then he is only showing how much he missed you.

On the other hand, if he jumps in a variety of situations, you could be dealing with more of a dominance issue and symptoms of a more complicated problem of communication and attitude. The longer this type of behavior is allowed to happen the harder it will be to regain control of the jumping issues. At this point and time I would highly suggest that you study alpha-dog techniques (tip: you can find more great information on dealing with a dominate dog over at Ez Dog Training At Home, you can find the link for this web site at the bottom of this page)

How to Stop Dog Jumping Fast

Staying with your training routine day in and day out is the only way you will be able to beak this habit of your dogs jumping. Taking a day off and not fallowing though with your training can undermine weeks worth of work, so stick to your plan.

Dog trainers world wide agree that the most effective way to curb unwanted behavior (jumping) in your dog is also the the easiest, and that is to simply ignore the bad or unwanted behavior and reward the wanted or good behavior. There is no need to yell or over correct. Negative attention is still attention and that is what your dog seeks when jumps on you.

Here is the best way to stop dog jumping.

When your dog jumps on you or is about to jump on you, turn your back to him and ignore this behavior. As soon as he has all four paws on the ground praise him. If he goes to jump again turn your back, cross your arms and face away.

This technique works really well because dogs actually study and understand body language more so than the spoken word.

Again, as soon as he has all four paws back on the ground praise him lavishly. Don't worry that you may be confusing him, dogs have a very short "training memory" and they can only comprehend the reaction you give to his behavior at that moment.

Dogs inherently want to please you and it want take long for him to figure out that four on the floor pleases you. - 32366

Owning a Dog: Turning Challenges into Joys

By Michelle Robert

Are you a dog owner? If so, then you will undoubtedly agree that sharing your life with a dog has it's shares of ups and downs. There are wonderful moments, and then there are others that are extremely challenging for all kinds of reasons. The fact remains however, that through it all, dogs are still "man's best friend" in my opinion...it is just harder to make friends with some dogs than with others.

My current dog in an eight year old miniature schnauzer who, while a very smart and affectionate little guy, was also a bit challenging in his behavior when he first came to live with us. Not long after his arrival, we discovered that:

1. Barked at everything and jumped/growled at anyone who came to visit us

2. Absolutely hated going to the groomers to get clipped.

So what could be done to help him...and us? Well we did some research, and spoke with our veterinarian to learn some techniques and strategies to help him become a "good friend". This article will discuss what we learned.

1. The barking/growling/jumping issue took some time because schnauzers, like all good little terriers are territorial, and are adamant about protecting that territory. Still, we could not scare away everyone who came to visit. So we tried all kinds of reward systems, squirting water, coins in a can, newspaper, just about everything. Nothing really worked. Finally our vet suggested a remote training collar, and after a lot more research, we tried the Innotek Ultrasmart Remote Trainer. One of the first things that we liked about it was that it has 9 stimulation levels so that we could start with the very lowest one first until we found the lowest one that was effective. It also has a tone-only training option providing more versatility. And we actually got the Innotek Ultrasmart Remote Trainer, 300 yds., which has a 300 yard range, allowing us to train from a distance. The best thing about the Innotek Ultrasmart? It worked. Within a short period of time our little guy learned good manners and our friends were no longer afraid to come visit us.

2. Helping our dog overcome the stress of going to the groomers each month involved not really training him. but training us. We figured that if we could learn to do his monthly clip at home, we would be able to help him feel more comfortable, and be able to get the job done quicker, making him happier as well. So we invested in the Oster A5 Turbo Clipper, and it has made all the difference in the world. We chose these clippers because as an Oster product, we knew they would last forever, so we wouldn't have to buy new ones each year, and because of the reviews on what a smooth, quiet, and fast job they did. I will say that we have been very pleased with how the Oster A5 Turbo Clipper works: other than it getting warm, which we easily solved with cleaning and changing out the blades and using Oster Kool Lube, it has been so easy to do his clipping. Once we learned how to do home grooming, voila, no more schnauzer trauma! In fact, since our dog gets a treat at the end, I actually think he likes getting clipped each month.

Having a dog can, and should be a joy, but it often takes a little work to get to that point. In our case, we had a little help from the Innotek Ultrasmart Remote Trainer, and the Oster A5 Turbo Clipper. But the investment and time we took to use these tools to help make life with our dog better for us and for him have been so worthwhile. The reward has been a merry, little schnauzer whose intelligence, loving nature, and desire to please truly make him our best friend! - 32366

Dog Training At Home

By Adrian Logan

Before obedience classes were popular, or even available, nearly every dog owner in the past relied on home dog training to get their dog to obey and perform tricks.

Pet owners who wanted a well behaved dog really had no choice but to spend time teaching Fido at home, and had to have the patience, willpower, and desire to do so. Many people learned how to train their dogs from their parents who had owned dogs, while others used instructions found in dog training books.

While there is a ready availability of dog obedience classes today, you can still accomplish home dog training just as your ancestors did. This is an especially useful option if you just don't have the available funds to go to obedience classes with your dog.

To train a dog, you can use a mixture of consistency, praise, and treats as dogs are quite a simple creature. Give them enough of those, and they'll be doing whatever you want in no time. You can teach them to obey you and to amuse your friends by performing some cute tricks.

One of the best method to train your dog is to model the behavior you want from him. For example, if you want him to sit on command, then gently place him in a sitting position while saying 'sit' in a firm tone.Remember to look into your dog's eyes too while conducting this training.

Keep repeating this. Soon, you only need to say 'sit' and you will see him do that. When he does it correctly, give him a treat and praise your dog. If your dog did not do it correct, continue to model the sitting position and the command. Your dog will get it eventually.

Some dogs catch on more quickly than others, so have some patience if it takes a while with yours. He will get it eventually.

Be sure to keep praising and giving treats for the first several times your dog does the right thing on command. This is important. After a while, you can forego the treats but continue to praise your dog. Your dog need to know whether are you happy with him. - 32366

Training Your New Puppy With Positive Reinforcement

By Wayland Royce

Positive reinforcement is a fancy phrase for what's essentially a very simple theory: using positive reinforcement entails rewarding the behavior that you wish to see repeated, and ignoring the behavior that you don't. It has long been recognized as a way to change children's negative behavior into positive behavior. Now it has been proven to have the same effect on non-humans.

Recently, I was impressed at the training two girls had done with a Killer Whale. Watching them take the huge animal through the routine I realized that the techniques used in positive reinforcement training would be about the only way that the whale could have been trained. An animal that size could not be forced to perform; willingness on its part was necessary. You can use the same technique to train your new puppy. Positive reinforcement training is the method of choice for most of the current expert dog trainers.

In the past, dog training techniques often included practices that are now considered cruel. They were based on using punishment rather than reward to correct the dog's behavior. The inhumane practices of the past are not the best way to train your puppy. Using positive reinforcement training techniques will give your puppy the training needed for safety and good behavior in a non-abusive manner.

Puppies are easily confused when given commands. The thing you have in your favor as you train your puppy is that there is a strong desire on her part to please you. Just be sure that she knows each time what you want her to do. To accomplish this you must use the same words each time for the same command. If you want her to sit don't say "sit here" one time and "sit down" another. Always use the same word or phrase. Your puppy will soon know exactly what is expected and behave accordingly.

Dogs respond well to meaningful rewards during training. Patting on the head is not such a reward for most dogs. They like to have their backs and chests rubbed and some like their ears played with. Play with your puppy in a very gentle manner to determine if she gives a positive response to physical affection

To keep the quality of your dog's learning at a high standard, it's also good to use tempting incentives for good behavior. Food treats and physical affection are what dog trainers refer to as "primary incentives" - in other words, they're both significant rewards that most dogs respond powerfully and reliably to.

Use the right timing. When your dog obeys a command, you must mark the behavior that you're going to reward so that, when she gets that treat in her mouth, she understands exactly what behavior it was that earned her the reward.

Your verbal response can also mark the appropriate behavior and then give her the treat. You must be consistent in this too. If you say "yes" in a happy voice and then give her the treat, you must do this each time she follows a command. Saying "yes" to her response to commands only occasionally will not mean anything to her..

For puppy training to be totally successful you and your puppy must both find it pleasant. Do not schedule training time when you are exhausted; be sure that your rewards are something she is willing to work for. - 32366

How To Teach A Puppy Not To Bite - 7 Steps To Remember

By Hannah Clapham

Teaching you new puppy not to bite is one of the most important first steps you will need to take. This behaviour if not stopped can become an act of aggression in your adult dog, possibly leading to a situation where he would seriously injure a child, even if unintentionally.

Be Consistent

It is important that everyone trains the puppy in the same way. Teach your children to treat your puppy exactly as you do. Biting is a natural act in a puppy. It is natural for them to bite their litter mates as an act of playing and so they will want to do exactly the same with you or you children.

Behave Just Like A Puppy

It is easy to stop them when you understand how they behave with their brothers and sisters. They stop if one of their litter mates yelps, so any time he nibbles on your fingers all you have to do is yelp just like him. He will stop and you can move your hand away. Don't play with him for a while after he bit you. When you playing with him and he doesn't bite, reward him with a few treats.

Keep Your Training Short

Keep your training sessions with the puppy short. Puppies don't have a long attention span. It is important for the training to be positive and it also helps if you talk to your puppy in a happy voice. Give lots of praise. Pet the puppy when he pays attention to what you are saying.

Plenty Of Toys

When you are working on how to educate a puppy not to bite make certain your pup is given toys to bite and chew on. Should your dog bites your hand say ouch or even yelp. Remain consistent in this. When your puppy backs off let him know this pleases you.

Love And Attention

All puppies require loads of love and attention. They also enjoy plenty of play time with the correct toys. Puppies like texture. Therefore, always keep lots of different types of toys on hand for your puppy to play with. He will pick his favourite one. Use that one when you are teaching him not to bite.

No Old Shoes Or Clothes

Nonetheless, do not provide your old boots and shoes or clothes to the puppy to have fun with. He has no understanding what is new and what is not. He might believe this indicates it is Acceptable to chew up all your clothing and footwear. Puppies can become confused very easily. He needs to realize that your things are not his playthings.

Stick With The Routine

Ensure everybody sticks with the program. Don't have the kids let your puppy nip or hurt them in play, this will confuse your puppy. Teach them to yelp and stop playing too. Make sure your puppy is provided rewards for good behaviour and not for bad.

Remember, it is a natural thing for puppies to bite and nip at their playmates so it takes a little time to unlearn the behaviour. No one would like a dog who is aggressive towards anyone so it is really worth putting into practice these instructions on the best way to teach a puppy not to bite. - 32366

Why Is Dog Training Unavoidable

By David E. Broadhead

One of the most important aspects that pertain to adopting a dog is training. Your dog can be given the right training either in formal coaching classes or at home. But there are some people who stay away from administering correct training to their dogs. This is because many of us feel that the dog is a member of the family and doesn't require any training. But what people do not realize is that depriving the dog of proper training will not do your pet any good.

In contrast to general belief, coaching your dog won't transform into him into a robotically obedient pet following your commands mindlessly. It will also not turn him into a trifling showpiece that spends his time doing tricks in front of visitors to the house. Dog training can however ; strengthen the dogs' relationship with you while ensuring he is getting as much joy out of life as he gives to you.

Irrespective of the size and breed of your dog, he wants training for sure. Regardless of the purpose for which you own a dog, you want to impart him acceptable training. It's vital for your dog to know how he is supposed to behave in different situations. Training helps your dog conform to different environments and adjust to people comfortably.

What's more, a well trained dog will save a large amount of extra stress in life. You will no longer have to fret about your mutt tearing at your furniture, chewing on your shoes or licking at the dinner plates the moment you turn your back. He'll also not jump on your guests while cautioning you that they have arrived with a short bark. Instead, he would hear your command to your command to sit and become an eventual source of pride thanks to his well trained manners and social behavior.

training your dog also allows him to fend for himself and offers adequate protection from any forthcoming danger. An untrained dog may not be recalled when he's wandered off. Such wanderings always carry a potential for danger which may cause significant wounds or perhaps death to the dog. Therefore , coaching your dog will prevent him from taking off without your permission. And also permit you to guard and con troll his behavior in high stress situations.

Your dog's quality of living also improves a lot after it gets trained. It learns how to accompany and satisfy human companions. This helps your dog to live as a buddy, rather than being treated as a bother and getting ignored. Thru learning to behave to your approval, your dog is able to add to its own happiness.

It is correct that training your dog may require investment in terms of time and money. But nevertheless, you want to give your dog correct training to make him a good canine voter. And don't worry ; your investment will bear results for sure. - 32366

Creating the Dog You Want

By Billy Matts

The perfect dog is not made by magic. Balance of respect and trust are what creates the perfect dog. "what ifs" become a thing of the past with unconditional trust and respect, such as "what if someone is bitten by my dog" or "what if the dog runs away". All of which are based on a lack of trust between dog and human, made when the humans understands dogs and their way.

Main aspects involved in developing respect and trust: The dog walk - one of the biggest factors in deciding if your relationship with your dog is as healthy as it could be, trust and respect both ways is earned on the walk.

Becoming the leader when walking with your dog means you need to set the positions. This is where your dog or dogs are placed, in front, next to, or behind. One tip for doing so is to leash your dog with a short leash that enables you to keep your dog by your side. You are then of course playing the leader. No tension should be on the leash, meaning that the leash is relaxed and not being strained. As you start to lead the walk with the dog next to or behind, your dog will give you respect as the leader.

If you find that tension occurs on the leash during the walk, one of two things is occurring. One, you are not projecting leadership and confidence enough, perhaps you are frustrated or in a rush, are you holding your arm in a relaxed manner so that you are not transmitting stress down the leash? Give trust by trusting your dog will not pull or misbehave and give respect by respecting their needs for discipline and structure, particularly on the walk.

To dogs, love means work before reward. Consistent and maintained rules such as leaving time for the walk, when to get out of bed, are all rules that you as the leader should set, this way your dog earns love in a more natural way, by following you first. Setting limits and rules enable your dog to see that you are serious in keeping her healthy and happy, not just spoiling by giving love, love and more love. Dogs need more than just love! They are different to us like this; we should take the time to understand this. - 32366

Proper Dog Training Can Start Even Before Birth

By Adriana Noton

One of the things that really angers most dog lovers is when they see an animal whose dog training has clearly been neglected. While some people may think dog training oppresses their animals, in fact it's just the opposite. A truly loving pet owner will see that his or her animal gets the best training possible.

Dogs have a natural instinct toward sociability. They're pack animals who look to a leader, an "alpha" dog, " to know how to behave. Good obedience training establishes the pet owner as the "alpha" dog without harshness or cruelty, so that their pet responds appropriately to other people, other pets and to the world around them.

Good dog training also should train the owner as well. Pet owners should know the proper commands to keep their animals under control, so that they can have confidence in how their pets will behave around people and other animals. This is especially important in situations where some kind of danger or hazard suddenly appears.

Eventually, however, as you learned the local language you will be able to have a happier, more fulfilling life there. The same is true of dogs that live as pets in a human environment. Through obedience training a dog learns how to associate behaviors with certain human sounds. Saying "sit" to a trained dog always results in the dog sitting. Saying "stay" keeps the dog in one place, and saying "come" brings the dog to its owner. With proper puppy training, both the owner and the dog develop a mutual understanding that each can trust in their relationship.

However, all puppies go through a period of "stranger avoidance" between six and 12 weeks. This is a natural fear that develops as a way to keep puppies safe from predators. During this time puppies exhibit more "startle" reactions to sounds and sudden movements. These reactions keep a pup safe, but they also could interfere with establishing relationships with people. That's why it best not to rush a puppy through these behavioral period. Let it get its bearings first.

Dogs that are petted and cuddle by people frequently during their first eight weeks of life tend to be better suited to living in a household as a family pet. Ideally puppies should be situated in their owners' homes between eight and 10 weeks. By 10 to 12 weeks, puppies can be more fearful or new things and new situations, which can impede their adaptation to their new homes.

Group training classes for puppies may not be available until the pup has had all its vaccinations, which occurs around three to four months of age. However sometimes a kennel or trainer will offer puppy socialization classes, in which the dog can be used to getting along with other puppies. This can be a good first step toward a more structure dog training class in the future.

One thing that is never, never, never appropriate in dog training is to strike, hit or physically abuse a dog in any way. Dogs, especially puppies, quickly become devoted to their owners and physical abuse will destroy that relationship. Always train a dog with firmness, but with patience and lots of love. - 32366

By Jim Witt

It can be difficult for a dog to learn to walk at our pace because they walk at such a quicker speed than us. Dog's are naturally curious animals and want to go explore. It is up to the owner to help them learn to walk on a leash without pulling you around.

To begin with, you need to establish your authority with your dog. Don't be cruel with your animal to show your authority, however. Simply build a good relationship with your dog because it will really help with the training process.

When teaching your dog to use a leash, there are different techniques you can use. The most popular technique is to give a fast snap on the leash whenever your dog decides to pull against the leash. Stop walking with the animal until he stops pulling, and then positively reinforce him every time he lets the leash have any slack.

Find a good training collar. Be careful when you use a choke collar as they may actually damage your dog if abused. The best types of dog collar are ones that won't slip off, such as a sturdy nylon dog collar.

Find a good quality dog leash. The best size leashes are ones that are 4 to 6 feet long. Find a dog leash that is comfortable for your grip and has good craftsmanship.

Start training with the dog sitting on your left side. You should both be looking in the same direction. When you start walking, start out with your left foot. By using your left foot every time you walk it will give the signal to your dog that you are about to walk.

Be sure to walk at your usual pace. Your dog will need to get use to the speed that you walk, and not their pace. Talk to your dog while you are walking so they have fun on the walk with you.

Walk a short distance and then stop walking. Praise your dog and tell him what a wonderful job he has done with walking with the leash. Practice this a few times a day. Keep it fun and your dog will be trained in no time. - 32366
